Steps to maximise your chances of conception

You can increase your chances of conception and delivering a healthy baby by following a few simple and common sense rules of thumb.

  1. Meet with your doctor for early prenatal care

If you haven't chosen a practitioner yet it's important to do so now as it can often take some time. Prenatal care is absolutely essential for you and your baby's health. The sooner you go to see a medical professional the better.

  2. Speak with your doctor about stopping the use of the contraceptive pill.

Some studies suggest that when you stop taking the pill there might be a delay of several months before ovulation begins. If you're thinking about getting pregnant you may want to change your method of birth control now giving your body time to adjust to life without contraceptive hormones before you try to get pregnant. Most importantly you and your doctor should discuss what's right for you.

  3. Try to pinpoint your most fertile time.

DISCOVER® 7 Day Pregnancy Planning Kit is over 98% accurate in laboratory studies in determining the 2 days you're most likely to ovulate. This over-the-counter at-home test kit detects your body's LH (luteinizing hormone) surge which indicates that ovulation is going to occur in 24-36 hours. If you have intercourse within this 24-36 hour window you will maximise your chances of falling pregnant. The DISCOVER® 7 Day Pregnancy Planning Kit is more accurate and less time-consuming than other ovulation predictor methods such as:

    • Charting your Basal Body Temperature (your temperature when you first wake up in the morning). Aside from being time-consuming many women never experience the characteristic temperature spike making this method less useful.
    • Color-coded CycleBeads are based on the Standard Days Method of natural family planning and are only intended for women with regular menstrual cycles that are between 26 and 32 days long.

  4. Change your lifestyle

A healthy lifestyle is essential before getting pregnant as it will help you and your baby throughout your pregnancy and throughout your lifetime.
    • Speak to your doctor or a nutritionist about a healthy diet and any specific requirements that will maximise your chances of conception and ensure your own best health and the best health for your baby.
    • While having one or two cups of coffee a day won't hurt your baby some researchers say too much caffeine may lead to premature birth or miscarriage. So don't overdo it or don't do it at all - choose decaf beverages instead.
    • Say NO to smoking, alcohol & illicit drugs. Do not smoke, drink alcohol or take illicit drugs during your pregnancy, it's not worth the risk.
    • Speak to your doctor about over the counter and prescription medicines you may be taking to ensure they will not affect the healthy development of your baby.
    • Talk to your doctor about an appropriate exercise plan.  Exercise in pregnancy promotes muscle tone, strength and endurance. It helps prepare for the stress of labour and can make it easier to get back into shape after your baby is born. Being active can reduce the discomfort of backache, fatigue and constipation and can even help you sleep better.
  5. Tell your partner to stay out of hot baths, spas and the sauna.  Warmer temperatures can lead to lower sperm count.

  6. Relax! Try not to let the hectic pace of modern life stress you out. The more you do to relieve stress the more your body is apt to ovulate normally.
