Testing for Ovulation
There are many factors that affect a women's ability to fall pregnant, from diet and exercise to age to their partners' lifestyle habits. Timing is one of the most important factors that affect the chance of becoming pregnant.
By charting your cycle from the beginning, you will know the two days out of the month you are most likely to fall pregnant and ensure you are maximising your chances. The record of your cycle will assist your doctor when you do become pregnant to predict your baby's due date. If you experience problems in conceiving and need further medical intervention, the record will ensure you have all the important information as soon as you begin getting help.
Your body gives the signal that ovulation is about to occur when there is an increase in the amount of luteinizing hormone (LH) in your urine. The DISCOVER® 7 Day Pregnancy Planning Kit is over 98% accurate in laboratory testing in detecting this LH surge. The LH surge corresponds to your most fertile time. You are most likely to become pregnant if you have intercourse within 24-36 hours after you detect your LH surge.
The science of fertility is complicated but the DISCOVER® 7 Day Pregnancy Planning Kit is easy. It takes ten seconds to use and you will have results in five minutes.
How is the DISCOVER® 7 Day Pregnancy Planning Kit different to other methods of predicting ovulation?
The DISCOVER® 7 Day Pregnancy Planning Kit is convenient to use and 98% accurate in laboratory studies in detecting the hormonal changes that accompany ovulation and in predicting the 2 days you are most likely to conceive. Other methods of ovulation prediction can not make that claim.
Counting days or natural family planning: This method works well if you have a regular 28-day cycle where ovulation occurs 11-14 days after the first day of your period. By watching the calendar or using counting aids to help you keep track of where you are in your cycle, you may be able to determine when you're most likely to ovulate. The drawback is that most women don't have a regular 28 day cycle making counting less accurate in predicting ovulation.
Charting your body temperature: You can chart your body temperature throughout your cycle using a Basal Body Thermometer taking note of the spike in temperature that may accompany ovulation. However many women never experience the characteristic temperature spike making this method less useful.
Saliva tests: At-home Saliva Tests reveal the fern-shaped patterns formed by your dried saliva when estrogen increases at the time of ovulation. Unfortunately, there is a great deal of human error when it comes to interpreting the results of these tests leading to less accurate results.
When should I start testing?
The best day to start testing depends on the length of your cycle (the number of days between the first day of one period and the first day of your next period). Count the first day of spotting or bleeding as Day 1. If your cycle is irregular (the number of days between your periods is not consistent) use the average number of days for the last 3 months.
The DISCOVER® 7 Day Pregnancy Planning Kit takes only 5 minutes to use and testing can be done at any time of the day. We recommend you test at approximately the same time each day. Reduce your liquid intake for 2 hours before testing so you won't dilute the amount of LH in your urine. The test is simple and the results are clear.
