What to expect on your visit to the doctor
After testing positive using the DISCOVER® ONESTEP® Instream Pregnancy Test it is important you see your doctor to ensure a healthy pregnancy for both you and your baby. Be prepared with questions and information regarding you and your partner's medical history. Your doctor will want to cover the following:
- Ensure all regular health checks and immunisations are up to date.
- Discuss medications (prescription and over the counter) you may be taking that could affect your pregnancy.
- Discuss any family or personal medical history to ensure this will not affect you or your baby during pregnancy eg asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure or lupus.
- Discuss previous miscarriages, abortions, birth defects or other births.
- Discuss a healthy nutrition and exercise plan which will benefit you throughout and after your pregnancy. Your doctor may also suggest dietary supplements to take in the months leading up to pregnancy and during your pregnancy.
- Discuss your own and your partner's use of illicit drugs, alcohol consumption and smoking. You should be open and honest about this; your doctor will maintain confidentiality.
- The date of your last period and your cycle length - if you have been using a DISCOVER® 7 Day Pregnancy Planning Kit you will have a good record of your cycle. This will help the doctor to predict your due date. The due date helps your doctor to measure the growth of the foetus and the progress of your pregnancy.
- The doctor may give you a full physical including:
- Pelvic exam
- PAP smear
- Blood test - testing for blood type, Rh factor, anaemia, syphilis, rubella, Hepatitis B
- Urine test - testing sugar levels, protein levels, presence of infections - Additional tests may also be carried out depending on your medical history, family background and race.
